Internal Medicine
Internal medicine cases are varied and complex. Each diagnosis is a puzzle to be solved where clues must be discerned from a thorough consideration of the history, clinical signs, physical examination and careful selection and interpretation of diagnostic tests. Yet, piecing these together and making a diagnosis is just the beginning. Treatment options can be varied and are selected to best suit each individual animal and owner with ongoing review and adjustment over time.
Our two internal medics Kate and Eve thrive on solving these mysteries and the full range of diagnostic facilities we have here at Eden Veterinary Referrals enables them to work through and unravel complex cases. Their experience then means they can communicate with and guide owners through decisions on treatment options and continually provide ongoing support to both referring vets and clients as cases progress over time.

Kate Sloan BVetMed (Hons) CertAVP(SAM) MRCVS
Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Medicine
Kate studied at the Royal Veterinary College, graduating with distinction in 2008. She then spent the first four years of her career in mixed farm and small animal practice, enjoying the challenges this offered, before settling in a busy, small animal hospital to focus on the area of veterinary work she had become passionate about, small animal medicine. Kate completed the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice, successfully passing the synoptic exam in Small Animal Medicine in 2016 and going on to become an Advanced Practitioner.
Before becoming a founding director of Eden Vets and Eden Veterinary Referrals Kate worked in several Tier 3 Small Animal Hospitals accepting complex internal medicine referral cases. She enjoys all areas of medicine but is particularly interested in emergency and critical care and relishes the challenge of managing these high pressure cases effectively.
Eve Dearden BVSc CertAVP(SAM) MRCVS
Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Medicine
Having graduated from the University of Liverpool with distinction in 2013 Eve went on to complete her certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practice in Small Animal Medicine, successfully sitting the synoptic examination in April 2019 and going on to become an Advanced Practitioner. Eve worked at a number of busy small animal hospitals across Cheshire and the West Midlands before setting up Eden Vets & Eden Veterinary Referrals in the autumn of 2020.
Eve loves all things internal medicine but has a particular interest in the use of diagnostic imaging, especially ultrasonography and endoscopy, as tools to fully investigate even the trickiest of cases.
NEW INTERNAL MEDICINE – PACKAGE
Eden Vets Referral – Internal Services
Advanced imaging
Our on-site CT scanner provides immediate access to advanced imaging to help achieve rapid diagnoses in a variety of complex medical cases. Utilising external specialist radiology reporting services with a range of available turnaround times means both routine and emergency cases can take advantage of this service.
Additionally, we have a monthly visiting MRI service at Eden Vets that allows access to in-depth imaging of the central nervous system amongst other body areas.
Both of our advanced imaging services can be accessed on a full referral, or an outpatient-only, basis, depending on the case and your needs. Please visit the main advanced imaging tab for more information.
Ultrasonography
Our internal medicine clinicians perform comprehensive ultrasound scans of the thorax, abdomen and parathyroid glands. Ultrasound-guided sampling, including fine needle aspirates or Tru-cut biopsies, of organs or specific lesions can provide a non-invasive method of achieving a cytological or histological diagnosis in many cases.
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
Upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy has many applications for both diagnosis and treatment of a variety of conditions.
Gastroscopy alone is invaluable for gastric ulcer diagnosis or foreign body retrieval, whilst full endoscopy +/- colonoscopy is regularly used to differentiate inflammatory and neoplastic gastrointestinal conditions. Our wide range of endoscopic equipment at Eden Vets allows examination of all sized patients.
Upper and Lower Airway Endoscopy
Rhinoscopy and bronchoscopy are important tools when investigating a range of nasal and pulmonary conditions in dogs and cats. At Eden Vets we have both rigid and flexible cameras with accessories for biopsy, foreign body retrieval and bronchoalveolar lavage.
Cystoscopy
Urethroscopy and cystoscopy give us a means to visualise inside the lower urogenital tract. This can be useful when investigating cases of haematuria, ectopic ureters or other suspected urogenital abnormalities.
In-house laboratory
Our comprehensive range of in-house laboratory machines means most blood and urinary testing can be run on-site with immediate results. Any external laboratories used are carefully selected based on their individual expertise.
Oncology
Our broad range of imaging facilities and ability to sample CSF and bone marrow, as well as difficult to access lesions via ultrasound guidance, means we can comprehensively diagnose and stage oncology cases. Treatment options may include referral to our surgical team, chemotherapy planning and initiation or onward referral for radiotherapy. We often converse with a specialist oncologist so we can ensure the advice we give is based on the most up to date evidence. Cases can be passed back to referring vets for ongoing chemotherapy or we can continue to manage them here where we are confident and experienced in the handling and administration of cytotoxic agents.
Critical Care
Our comprehensive services and 24-hour medical nursing care means we can offer the high level of care required for critical cases. Our experienced team can assess patients quickly and safely and our extensive facilities allow rapid on-site diagnostics and interventions to give these cases the best chance of a successful outcome. Patients can be managed in isolation facilities or in an oxygen kennel if required. We can carry out transfusions, place feeding tubes for assisted nutrition or chest drains for cases such as pyothorax or trauma. We are confident in placing central venous lines, taking arterial samples for blood: gas analysis and managing critical cases under anesthesia where necessary.
As well as caring for the animal, these cases are often highly stressful and emotional for owners and require exceptional communication and empathy. We pride ourselves on providing this and have a quiet room for visitors as well as staff trained to offer support to upset and distressed clients at these difficult times.
