Neurosurgery Services

We are excited to announce the launch of our brand-new Neurosurgery Service at Eden Vet Referrals, expanding our commitment to providing comprehensive specialist care for your patients. Led by our experienced surgical clinician,
Dr. Humberto (Bert) Abreu, who has a strong interest and background in neurosurgery.

Spinal disease can take many forms from the acute disc extrusions commonly seen in Dachshunds and other small breed dogs, to complex vertebral malformations, chronic disc protrusions, lumbosacral disease, and spinal fracture-luxation’s.

Accurate diagnosis is essential to providing effective treatment. Our state-of-the-art imaging and surgical facilities allow us to provide rapid diagnoses and advanced treatment options tailored to each case. Whether it’s an emergency or a complex long-term condition, your patients will receive expert, compassionate care throughout their journey.

Many patients with surgical neurological conditions need prompt investigation and treatment, and so we aim to see urgent neurological cases the same day, where required.

Our neurosurgeon is happy to provide email and telephone advice to Veterinary surgeons on the management of neurological cases.

As of 18th August 2025, our new service will be accepting referrals for a range of neurological conditions, including: Intervertebral Disc Disease & Lumbosacral Disease. Each case will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, and a package price offered for simplicity of the client.

We aim to work closely with referring vets to ensure clear communication, timely updates, and ongoing support. Referrals can be submitted directly via our website or by contacting our team.

Eden Vets Referral – Neurosurgery Services

Common procedures performed at Eden Vets for spinal disease include:

  • Hemilaminectomy and disc fenestration for acute disc extrusions
  • Foraminotomy for lateralized disc extrusions and certain chronic disc protrusions
  • Corpectomy for chronic ventral disc protrusions
  • Distraction-Stabilisation of any vertebral segment – often required in chronic disc protrusion and vertebral malformation cases where chronic instability is implicated in the disease process. Atlantoaxial luxation in small breed dogs is another good example of the need for this procedure.
  • Fracture-luxation stabilization using a range of internal plate fixation systems or bone cement and screws gives us versatility in fixation of traumatic injurie soft the vertebral column.
